40 bhp, 200.5 cu. in. inline L-head four-cylinder engine, three-speed manual transmission, solid front axle with transverse semi-elliptic leaf spring, live rear axle with transverse semi-elliptic leaf spring, four-wheel mechanical drum brakes. Wheelbase: 103.5" Ford offered no fewer than four “Fordor” sedans during the Model A period. Most of these were of the “three-window” type, with a side window in the rear quarter. These were called Standard or Town Sedan, depending on their appointments. Bodies were supplied by both Murray and Briggs. The “two-window” Fordor, built only by Briggs, featured a “blind” quarter, giving greater privacy to rear seat passengers. The Deluxe Fordor was catalogued as style 170-B. An older restoration, this car has been owned by Mr. Astor for nearly 30 years, during which time very little has been done to it aside from an engine rebuild. The body paint, in a red somewhat richer than Ford Maroon, shows a fair amount of texture, surface scratches and cracking in stressed areas. The black fenders are much better in quality, showing only very minor surface scratching. The brightwork is generally good, although the radiator shell shows some blemishes. On the other hand, the Ford Twolight headlamps are in very nice condition. The car has the Ford accessory quail radiator cap, dual cowl lamps and dual sidemount spares. There is a rear-mounted trunk rack with trunk installed. The interior, in gray cloth, is well-fitted and appears very nice overall. An accessory clock is installed in the rear-view mirror, and there is a pull-down shade on the rear window. The odometer shows 1441 miles, the distance covered since restoration. The engine, which dates from May 1929, shows much evidence of use, and has not been detailed in some time. It is, however, period correct with the exception of fan belt and hoses. The undercarriage has significant surface rust, but is solid in all respects. This is a very desirable Model A Deluxe Fordor Sedan, only the 1931 model being rarer. It can be enjoyed as is, or serve as the basis for another restoration. |
