Luxury sedans were one of the most popular segments in the automotive market during the late 1960s and Mercedes-Benz had just released the ideal entry with the new 280SE. Often described as "perfection on wheels", the new 280SE offered both performance and comfort. Fitted with a newly developed V8 engine, these cars soon earned a reputation of being a driver’s car with a combination of superb power, outstanding handling and riding comfort.

Geared largely towards the American customer, the 280SE carried a base price of $6,577, which was on par with Cadillac's Sedan de Ville, Lincoln's Continental sedan and Chrysler's Crown Imperials. But the Mercedes had so much more to offer; quality European craftsmanship was evident in the fit and finish of the bodies as well as the fine interiors that had seats skinned in durable tufted leather and rich, hand finished wood trim adorning the dashboard and garnish moldings. At the end of the 1969 model year, Mercedes- Benz had sold nearly 26,000 vehicles, doubling their sale figures from 1965.

The 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Sedan offered here is for those who want to be cradled in the lap of luxury. With just two past owners, both caring lady drivers who pampered their Mercedes, it has always been well maintained. Recently the engine was treated to an upper-end rebuild and the vendor tells us that this car is ready for the road. It is still finished in its original Ivory exterior and Tobacco Brown leather interior, complemented by an outstanding finish on the wood trim. There have been a few updates, such as a new sound system; however, the Mercedes-Benz continues to boast a number of original features. The instrumentation and air conditioning system, which we are told still remains a period correct R-12 style system, function just as they did when new.

This car invites you take a close look inside and out, under the hood, and in the luggage compartment. A thorough inspection will demonstrate that the superb engineering of the 280SE is as impressive today as it was 38 years ago.
