LONDON, England (March 17, 2009) – A magnificent collection of historic road and racing Ferraris will return to their Maranello birthplace this Spring for RM Auctions’ eagerly anticipated Ferrari Leggenda e Passione event, May 17, 2009.

Now in its third year, the event - held in association with Sotheby’s - is the only auction exclusively dedicated to the Ferrari marque, held within the Maranello factory grounds and endorsed by the Ferrari factory. The event is now established as an undisputed highlight of the auction calendar, and is without doubt the premier opportunity for collectors to buy the world’s finest historic Ferraris.

“The Ferrari Leggenda e Passione sale is an unrivalled opportunity for lovers of this emotive brand to purchase the best and most desirable examples available to the market,” said Max Girardo, Managing Director of RM Europe.

“This year’s sale is exceeding our expectations. We have some incredible and unusual early cars offered for sale as well as some of the most desirable sports and racing Ferraris ever made. The recent addition of a Monaco Grand Prix-winning Maserati 250F is another incredibly exciting development. Cars like that simply don’t come to the market on any but the rarest occasions,” he added.

The Maserati 250F is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful and successful Grand Prix cars ever made. In period it enjoyed enormous competition success in the hands of legendary names such as Juan-Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss. RM Auctions is privileged to be offering for sale the 1956 Monaco Grand Prix-winning example taken to victory in the hands of Stirling Moss. Chassis number 2526 enjoyed an extensive racing career and was also driven in period by Fangio, Jean Behra, Carroll Shelby and others during the 1957 and 1958 seasons. Amazingly, the current owner is only the fourth privileged custodian of this significant car since it was manufactured.

Other significant cars consigned to the sale include a broad range of models from Ferrari’s earliest days right through to a 1990 Formula One car. Representing some of Ferrari’s earliest models and set to attract major interest at the Maranello auction is an impressive series of coachbuilt cars from the esteemed private collection of Mr. Edgar Schermerhorn. Carefully assembled over the past 15 years, this Holland-based ‘Coachbuilt Collection’ spans several decades of Ferrari production and features some of the finest vintage Ferraris in existence, with a particular focus on coachbuilt models. Included in the auction line-up are: an ultra-rare 1949 Ferrari 166 Inter Coupé by Touring (s/n 017S); an early 1949 Ferrari 166 Inter Coupé (s/n 037S), the seventh of a total of 10 Ferraris bodied by Carrozzeria Stabilimenti Farina; a 1950 Ferrari 195 Inter Coupé (s/n 0105S), the sixth of only 35 Ghia-bodied Ferraris; and a 1953 Ferrari 212 Europa Coupé (s/n 0287EU) with coachwork by Carrozzeria Vignale. Another highlight from the Schermerhorn Collection set to cross the block is a highly desirable 1964 Ferrari 500 Superfast (s/n 6043), the most expensive production car of its time and popular amongst Ferrari’s wealthiest clients.

“We are delighted to have been entrusted by Mr. Schermerhorn with the important task of selling his private collection,” adds Girardo.

“It is a magnificent collection and truly represents a singular opportunity for the dedicated enthusiast and collector to acquire one – or more – of Ferrari’s finest historic models.”

Some of the other early consignments for the May 17 event feature a series of competition greats – including an ultra-rare 1964 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso Competizione and a race-bred 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB/C.

Originally displayed at the 1964 Geneva Motor Show, the 1964 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso Competizione, chassis number 5367 GT, boasts an impressive racing history. Sold new to its first owner in March 1964, s/n 5367 GT immediately embarked on an extensive racing career, including a fifth in class finish at the 1964 Tour de France, driven by Charles Muller and Heini Walter. The subject of a comprehensive restoration in early 2000, this car has since been actively campaigned in various historic events, including the Shell Ferrari Maserati Historic Challenge.

The race-bred 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB/C, chassis number 07545, was one of just 15 special ‘Competizione Clienti’ cars produced by the factory in 1965 and one of only two right-hand drive models. In 1967, the car was shipped to Australia, where it has remained ever since, and in 1968 claimed a first in class finish at the Surfers Paradise 6-Hour event. Under the attentive care of its current owner for over 25 years, it has since participated in various hill climb events across Australia, including the well-known Targa Tasmania.

Other notable highlights for the May 17 auction include:
  • • A legendary 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, considered one of the most valuable Ferrari racing cars ever to be offered at auction
  • • A stunning 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Ellena Coupé, a striking example of one of Ferrari’s earliest series-built GT cars
