The Series 92 Detroit diesel is a two-stroke engine, built in configurations from six to sixteen cylinders. A bored-out version of its predecessor, Series 91, it was the predominant bus engine in North America in the 1980s and ’90s, although truck, industrial, and marine applications have been common. Detroit diesels are typically paired with Allison transmissions from a sister General Motors division.
This Prevost motor home was built in 1990 and converted by American Coach, Inc., of Allen, Michigan, for Michael Dingman to use in his motor sports career. After three seasons, he sold it to Parker Johnstone for use in Indy car racing. After use by a subsequent owner as a hospitality vehicle, Mr. Dingman bought it back for his vintage racing activities in the 2000s. It has a 20-kilowatt Martin diesel generator and carries 150 gallons of fuel, 300 gallons of water, and a 300-gallon tank for wastewater.
Amenities include a bathroom with a shower, a cooktop, a microwave, a side-by-side refrigerator-freezer, and a large screen television. It also has DVD, CD, and VCR capability. There are leather captain’s chairs for three and a matching velour sectional sofa.
The coach has covered 258,000 miles. The engine has not been rebuilt but has been carefully maintained and serviced annually, the last time prior to being placed in storage about three years ago. The tires are about five years old and in good condition. It was repainted, and the kitchen trailer, which is also offered in the auction, was painted to match around the same time.
Although recently in storage, it is in excellent condition and easily returned to the road. Fitted with every convenience, it is the perfect cross-country transport, and when combined with the unique kitchen trailer, a terrific coach with which to attend a race weekend and socialize with fellow enthusiasts.
