1965 Pontiac GTO Convertible
Sold for $81,400
- Chassis no. 237675B126587
In 1964 Pontiac offered a GTO option on its Tempest models. Despite its low production due to UAW strikes, it was a great hit with enthusiasts. It also rocketed the Pontiac Division to the forefront of the quickly evolving muscle car market. In fact, the 1965 Pontiac GTO was named Motor Trend Magazine’s Car of the Year.
For 1965 Pontiac raised the bar a little higher. Although not yet a separate series, the GTO was immediately distinguishable from its Tempest siblings thanks to blacked-out grilles, bold grille, trunk lid and rear side fender lettering, a single hood scoop and elongated V-shaped badges behind the front wheel openings. Inside, a rally gauge cluster was offered, while under the hood the 421-style cylinder heads were re-cored to improve the flow of gases.
This striking 1965 Pontiac GTO was delivered to Reedman Pontiac in Bristol, Pennsylvania in May and delivered later that year in October. The fourth owner purchased this GTO in 1982 and enjoyed it for the next twenty-three years. The 1965 Pontiac GTO Convertible then underwent a full frame-off restoration. Other than the outer rear bottom panels on the rear fenders, the body of this GTO remains entirely original. The rust-free and straight body was completely stripped and refinished in red in PPG single stage urethane.
The show quality brightwork was a result of a professional polishing of the stainless and triple chrome plating. The frame was completely dismantled and all the components either replaced and painted or refinished and powder coated. A new gas tank, stainless steel fuel and brake lines, and all new bushings, ball joints, etc. were fitted.
The original, powerful 389 cubic inch V8 had been previously rebuilt and is understood to remain in excellent running condition with little or no wear in the detailing. All the components are correct with date codes and numbers matching.
The interior was completely rebuilt and features fresh red vinyl seats, panels, matching carpets and new hardware. A new vinyl power top ensures everything stays dry if the weather changes suddenly.
Such amenities and documentation as the original window sticker, owner’s manual, owner protection plan “protect-o-plate” and build sheet are included, as well as an extensive folder documenting the restoration costs and process.
Shown at the AACA Southeastern Spring meet in New Bern, North Carolina in May 2007, this free-spirited GTO Convertible captured a First Junior Award, while at the Eastern ACCA Spring event it won a Senior Award. Overall, this GTO is an excellent example that displays its authenticity in its documentation and its quality in its cosmetic and mechanical presentation.
