After a decade of production, the factory pulled out all the stops to present the brand new Corvette of 1963. However, before the new Stingray even appeared in show rooms, enterprising road racers like Dick Guldstrand, Bob Bondurant, Allen Grant and Davy MacDonald had them on the track.
These were no ordinary Corvettes. Usually destined for the SCCA’s B-Production class, they were ordered from the factory with the 1963 Z06 Regular Production Option, also known as “Special Performance Group.” The option, which essentially turned a stock Corvette into a factory prepped race car, cost nearly half as much again as the car itself, and only 199 cars were assembled with the Z06 option in 1963.

Nearly 40 years later the Z06 would make its return in 2001 as a high-performance version of the already highly capable fifth generation Corvette. Sure, there had been other performance models – during the height of the Muscle Car era in 1969, the C3 equipped with the legendary L88 big block with aluminum heads and 500bhp ruled the streets with an iron fist, the in the eighties the C4 B2K Callaway Twin Turbo was a point and shoot weapon and the LT5-powered ZR1 released a few years later offered a more complete performance package. However, while these Corvettes delivered a serious step up in performance over their contemporaries, their impact was not as great, nor did they share the same allure and link to racing success as the original Z06.

The fifth generation Corvette was replaced in 2005 by the much-anticipated C6 and one year later the Z06 was reintroduced, offering never before seen supercar levels of performance.

The 7.0-liter engine produces 505 brake horsepower that can slingshot the C6 Z06 from a standstill to 60mph in 3.5 seconds. It has a dry sump lubrication system to ensure that when experiencing over 1.0g of lateral forces, the engine is not robbed of precious oil. The C6 Z06 is the only production Corvette to receive a frame made entirely of aluminum. It is hydroformed and is dimensionally identical to that of the regular C6, just significantly lighter. Lightweight composite materials are also used extensively to further aid in bringing the total weight (3,132lbs) of the car down while increasing its rigidity. What may be the most paradoxical element of the new Z06 is that through engine management wizardry, it is the only 500+ horsepower production car in the world to be exempt from the American government’s gas-guzzler tax.

As stated earlier, like the original Z06, the second and third are entwined with Corvette racing success. The C5 Z06 and, to an even greater extent, the C6 Z06, benefited directly from advancements tested and perfected in the R-Series racing cars. In 2001, the same year the Z06 was offered, the C5-R would achieve its first Le Mans win with Canadian driver Ron Fellows behind the wheel. This season would mark a turning point in Corvette’s international endurance racing program, as they have dominated the series ever since, with Ron Fellows leading the charge.

An accomplished road racer, Ron Fellows is inextricably woven into the Corvette Racing team’s success. He helped test and develop the first Corvette C5-R race car and recorded the team’s first win in 2000. Fellows also grabbed the ALMS GTS class championship in 2002 and shared that position in 2003 and 2004. He has been a part of all six consecutive ALMS GT1 manufacturers’ championships for Chevrolet, and was voted the most popular ALMS driver in 2004 and 2005. Additionally, he has slipped behind the wheel of NASCAR Nextel Cup Chevy Monte Carlo SS race cars when the series hits road courses. He has also scored a pair of NASCAR Craftsman Truck series wins, three NASCAR Busch Series wins, 19 SCCA Trans Am wins and was the GM Player’s Challenge champion in 1989.

Marking his championship tenure with Corvette Racing’s GT1-class domination in the ALMS, Corvette racing living legend Ron Fellows was celebrated with a specially prepared 2007 Corvette Z06 production model. Each example is distinguished by Arctic White paint (including the door handles) that is accented with a racing-style fender stripe and Ron Fellows’ autograph.

The front fender graphics are reminiscent of the identifying graphics of the Corvette GT1 race car. They feature double Monterey Red Metallic stripes with Machine Silver borders and Fellows’ autograph in a contrasting Victory Red shade, along with the callouts of the championship years when he was at the wheel. There is also a maple leaf logo motif incorporated with the graphics, a nod to Fellows’ Canadian heritage. Indeed, the red-over-white color scheme of the car’s paint and graphics represents Canada's colors.
Exterior cues include a full-width racing spoiler and a unique windshield banner. Additional standard equipment includes the well-equipped 2LZ package and chrome wheels. Special interior appointments include red seats, center console, door panels and instrument panel, red leather-covered armrest with a Corvette-signature “cross flags” logo that is hand-signed and numbered by Ron Fellows as well as tech pattern interior trim.

This special Corvette Z06 is the first signed special edition in Corvette’s 54-year history, and is the first Arctic White Z06 ever offered. Only 399 were produced: approximately 300 for the United States, 33 for Canada and 66 for other export markets. Number 399 of 399 built, this, the last of the limited series features Ron Fellows’ personal autograph in the console and is dated January 23, 2007, while the car was still on the assembly line. Donated by General Motors, all proceeds from the sale of this, the last Ron Fellows Z06, are going to Autism Speaks™.

Please note that in order to complete this purchase General Motors will require the transaction to be conducted by an authorized General Motors dealership. As the car is currently on an MSO, it has yet to be titled and will be following payment for the vehicle after the auction. Further details of this process can be obtained by speaking with one of RM Auctions’ motor car specialists.
