1950 Mercury Station Wagon

Mercury’s 1950 models were carefully improved in the same manner as Ford. There were now pushbutton door handles, new parking lights and subtle changes to the grille and hood trim. A completely new instrument panel called “Safe-T-Vue” grouped gauges more closely together and raised them closer to eye level. Indirect lighting, a Ford feature in 1949, reduced glare. A new “Merco-Therm” heating and ventilating system promised “living room comfort” and “a complete change of air…in a matter of seconds.”
As in 1949, the station wagon had a full-leather interior, with seating for eight in three-two-three configuration. The chassis was reinforced, and the available cargo area comprised a massive 118 cubic feet with a half-ton load capacity. A wider rear axle was also used, along with heavier, nine-leaf rear springs.
While most 1950 Mercurys had a painted dashboard, the station wagon complemented its wood exterior with a wood grain dash, which extended to the door panels. At the rear, the sliding-glass side windows provided excellent ventilation, while the counterbalanced tailgate compensated for the weight of the rear-mounted spare tire.
An excellent restoration, this 1950 Mercury is a carefully detailed example that joined the famed Nick Alexander Collection in 2004, arguably the country’s finest woodie collection, and remained there until August 2009. The body contours continue to be excellent, the black paint has a deep shine, and the wood displays the precise work executed by the Alexander Restorations shop. The brightwork is flawless, and the Lincoln-scripted glass shows virtually no separation.
The brown leather upholstery and black rubber floor mats were recent upgrades, and the front seat has lap belts for two. The dashboard and window surrounds were recently restored as well, while the instruments are excellent and the steering wheel is very nice, as is the brown headliner. The car is also equipped with a radio, heater and factory directional signals. The engine was recently painted in correct green. The car has newer Firestone 7.10-15 blackwall tires, and the spare is mounted on the tailgate under a metal cover.
In 2005, the Mercury received a Dearborn Award from the Early Ford V8 Club at Keystone, Colorado, and it is noted to run and drive well today. The odometer currently reads approximately 6,500 miles.
