The year 1987 was a landmark one for Ferrari. Not only was “Il Commendatore” celebrating his 90th birthday, but his company was also celebrating its 40th anniversary. It is reported that he decided to build something special: an all-out, traditional sports car that would succeed the 288 GTO as the ultimate Ferrari.



Mechanically, the F40 bore much in common with the 288 GTO, and it was, in fact, closely based on the 288 GTO Evoluzione, a race version of the GTO that never saw competition due to a change in regulations. The F40’s type F120 AB chassis shared the wheelbase dimensions of its predecessor, but it featured a wider track and the extensive use of carbon fibre and Kevlar; the lightweight body also featured NACA ducts that contributed to cabin and brake cooling, whilst the engine was displayed under a louvered Plexiglas engine cover.



The F40’s engine is based on the 288 GTO’s twin-turbocharged V-8 and was bored to displace almost three litres, which, in combination with additional tuning, contributed to an output of 478 brake horsepower, making the F40 Ferrari’s most powerful road car to date. The powerful engine and lightweight construction helped the F40 deliver breath-taking performance, hitting 60 mph from a standstill in 3.8 seconds, with a top speed of 201 mph, making it the fastest car in the world when it was launched.



With the special distinction as the last Maranello road car to be engineered under Enzo Ferrari’s direct leadership, the F40 remains one of the most celebrated high-performance supercars ever built.



The F40 presented here was delivered new to celebrated Dutch Ferrari distributor Kroymans in 1990, and it passed through just two owners’ hands before being acquired by the current owner in 2005. Chassis number 82727, currently displaying just over 50,000 kilometres, was delivered in the now coveted “non-cat, non-adjustable” configuration, meaning that it is without a catalytic converter or adjustable suspension. It was finished in the traditional Rosso Corsa and is equipped with a Fuchs titanium exhaust system and rare leather sports seats, with the latter adding a touch of class to the race-inspired interior. It comes complete with original tools, books, and car cover, and it is currently in the process of being Ferrari Classiche certified.



The car is accident free and has been serviced by the reputable Rothe workshop in Hamburg for the last 15 years; there are receipts totalling €50,000, excluding the replacement of fuel tanks, which highlight the care that this F40 has received over the years. In addition to this regular maintenance, Rothe rebuilt the car’s gearbox in 2012, at a total cost of €20,000.



The F40 was the ultimate, and final, Ferrari supercar designed and built under the stewardship of Enzo Ferrari himself. Chassis number 82727 is a fantastic example of an uncompromising and incredibly exciting car that is renowned amongst Ferrari experts for delivering outrageous performance and impeccable style.

L'année 1987 est particulièrement importante pour Ferrari. Non seulement "Il Commendatore" célèbre son 90e anniversaire, mais son entreprise fête aussi ses 40 ans d'existence. Pour l'occasion, il aurait décidé de produire quelque chose de spécial : une voiture de sport radicale, utilisable sur route et qui succèderait à la 288 GTO comme Ferrari ultime.



Mécaniquement, la F40 présentait de nombreuses similitudes avec la 288 GTO et elle était, en fait, étroitement dérivée de la 288 GTO Evoluzione. Celle-ci était une version compétition de la GTO qui, à la suite d'un changement de règlementation, n'avait jamais pu être utilisée en course. Le châssis type F120 AB de la F40 présentait le même empattement que sa devancière, mais avec une voie plus large et une utilisation extensive de la fibre de carbone et du Kevlar ; la carrosserie allégée était équipée de prises d'air NACA qui contribuaient au refroidissement de l'habitacle et des freins. Et l'on pouvait apercevoir le moteur sous un couvercle en Plexiglas percé d'ouïes.



Basé sur le V8 double turbo de la 288 GTO, le moteur de la F40 avait été réalésé à presque 3 litres ce qui, avec des réglages plus modernes, lui permettait de développer 478 ch. Ainsi, la F40 était la Ferrari de route la plus puissance jamais produite. Le moteur extrêmement puissant et la carrosserie légère se combinaient pour offrir des performances époustouflantes : passant de 0 à 100 km/h en 3,8 secondes, elle atteignait une vitesse de pointe de 323 km/h, ce qui en faisait, lors de son lancement, la voiture de route la plus rapide du monde.



Forte de la particularité remarquable d'être la dernière voiture de route de Maranello conçue directement sous la direction d'Enzo Ferrari, la F40 reste une des supercars les plus célèbres jamais construites.



La F40 qui est présentée ici a été livrée neuve en 1990 à Kroymans, le fameux distributeur Ferrari aux Pays-Bas. Elle est ensuite passée entre les mains de deux personnes avant d'être acquise en 2005 par le propriétaire actuel. Portant le numéro de châssis 82727, affichant actuellement 50 000 km, elle a été livrée dans la configuration, aujourd'hui très appréciée, dépourvue de catalyseur et à suspension non pilotée ("non-cat, non-adjust"). Peinte dans le traditionnel Rosso Corsa, elle est équipée d'un système d'échappement Fuchs en titane et de rares sièges baquet en cuir, cette sellerie apportant une séduisante touche de luxe dans l'habitacle inspiré de la compétition. La voiture est complète avec ses outils d'origine, ses carnets et une housse. La certification par Ferrari Classiche est actuellement en cours.



Cette voiture n'a jamais subi d'accident et a été entretenue ses 15 dernières années par le garage Rothe, un atelier réputé de Hambourg ; un ensemble de factures totalise 50 000 €, sans compter le remplacement des réservoirs de carburant, ce qui souligne le niveau de soin dont a bénéficié cette F40 au fil des ans. En plus de son entretien régulier, Rothe s'est chargé en 2012 d'une reconstruction de la boîte de vitesses, pour un coût total de 20 000 €.



La F40 était la meilleure, et la dernière, supercar Ferrari conçue et réalisée sous l'autorité d'Enzo Ferrari lui-même. Cet exemplaire numéro de châssis 82727 est un exemple fantastique de cette voiture sans compromis et incroyablement excitante, renommée parmi les spécialistes Ferrari pour délivrer des performances vraiment exceptionnelles, dans un style impeccable.
